GLASGOW

Another week is over and another weekend as well! Glasgow!!! You absolute belter! There is literally no city I could love more!

Nevertheless, the week started with some practise for our gig in Barra which is actually in two days! We started preparing things quite early thinking that it’s a long time till Barra and now it’s just round the corner. We still managed to prepare tunes and I can’t wait for a great time. My first time on Barra and I’m sure it’ll be great!

I managed to bring a frisian tune from the island I come from and we arranged it for Barra! How nice is that. And looking at the tune we realized how many similarities there is between the languages as well. There are similar structures and the content shows a lot of similarities as well, it’s quite impressive to be honest. Can’t wait to perform it and see what the Barra audience thinks of frisian folk music.

Next on: The weekend in Glasgow! It was an effort and it took me a while to get there but it was all worth it! I left Grimsay at 5am on Friday morning took the ferry from Lochboisdale to Oban at 6am, landed in Oban by 11.30am, train to Glasgow and then finally set foot in Glasgow at 4pm. That makes 11 hours of travelling! What a trip! I found out that a friend from Denmark that I know from the piping workshop was in Glasgow at the same time, what a coincidence. So we met up and had some great cocktails in the Hard Rock Café in Buchanan Street just before I picked up another friend from the train station. Finally saw her after two long months! Because we were both doing an AuPair in Scotland last year we met up literally every second weekend and now we didn’t see each other in two months because I am not going to the mainland that often. Maybe understandable if you see the time and effort it takes every time…

We went shopping and I bought all the stuff I can’t buy on the island but honestly, I bought too much stuff! Because I was on the mainland I was like: Well now that I’m on the mainland I might as well buy it. Never mind. After that we just got a meal deal at Sainsburys, went into the hostel and chilled on the windowsill. We had a great view from the room because it was on the 9th floor and you had a good overview of Glasgow! And then there are these friends where you can literally talk the biggest rubbish a person has ever heard for hours, whilst looking at the Glasgow skyline. Well that was us. For almost four hours. What a great time and literally the funniest and weirdest things that come out of these conversations!

Because we went to see Glasgow a lot of times during our AuPair, there were not too many things we hadn’t seen in Glasgow so we decided to have a chilled day in Glasgow. We took the subway and went to the Kelvingrove Museum which is always worth it even if you have already seen it a couple times. Because the weather was very nice we decided to walk the way back to the hostel. A stop at Wetherspoons on Sauchiehall Street with some nice pizza and then through Buchanan Street and some more shopping we finally made it back to the hostel to get ready for the gig in the evening. The Barrowlands. What a great venue! The place was packed and the audience was amazing! The band played new songs, put on an incredible gig with many highlights and impressed everyone! What a special show! Can’t wait for more music and more unforgettable memories.

Sunday was rather calm and recovery day. A late breakfast in Café Nero, chats and coffee in Starbucks and reunion with the #TireeTroopers. We met the girls on Tiree, when we were all volunteering for Tiree Music Festival this year. Even though we just met on the Monday evening at the afterparty we are still in contact and share great memories. Can’t wait to see yous at Celtic Connections in January for some birthday celebrations!

After Calmac cancelled the Oban-Lochboisdale ferry I was supposed to take and it was again time to find Plan B to get back home, but we love planning don’t we? Luckily there are friends in Inverness who are on the way back from Inverness to Uist so here I am in the train to Inverness, beforemeeting them there to get up to Uig by car and then finally take the Uig-Lochmaddy ferry in the evening. Oh well, there is a thing about islands. Always be prepared for journeys to take longer than you expect. Never mind.

I am writing this blog whilst listening to the videos (yes listening, not watching) from the gig on Saturday and I am still reminiscing about the good times we had! One of the best things when going back home from a gig is definitely scrolling through your gallery, finding all the videos you took and remember all the good things that happened. Beyond grateful for all the memories!

I’m almost in Inverness so that’s me done for this blog! Barra next and then we’ll see what life will offer this week!

Take care guys!

Cheerio bye,

Emilia
